WSSU Tuition and Fees
The UNC Board of Governors determines the tuition and fees for each University of North Carolina System school, including Winston-Salem State University.
Some or all instructional formats for all or part of the 2020-21 academic year may change due to the public health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As has always been the case, tuition and fees are charged at the beginning of the semester and will remain in place regardless of any changes in instructional format. Tuition and fees will not be refunded in the event that instructional format changes for any part of the 2020-21 academic year. Fixed Tuition Information
The UNC System has established a Fixed Tuition Program to help in-state undergraduates at public universities complete their degree quickly and affordably. This was effective for students enrolled as of FALL 2016 thru Spring 2021. Students who qualify for fixed tuition will pay the same amount of tuition until they graduate as long as they remain continually enrolled each semester and complete their education within four years. (This time period is prorated for transfer and continuing students.)

Eligibility
The fixed tuition policy applies to North Carolina residents who are:
- First-time freshmen
- Continuing students
- Transfer students
- Non-resident undergraduate students
- Graduate students
- Professional students
- Dual enrollment students
- Second degree students are not eligible for fixed tuition under the policy.
How many credits do I need to take to graduate in four years?
The slogan is “15 in 8 and You Graduate.” This means taking 15 credits per semester will put you on track to graduate in four years.
What if my program is a five-year program?
If you are in a program officially designated by the Board of Governors as a five-year program, your tuition will be fixed for 10 consecutive semesters. The requirement to be continuously enrolled remains.
What does “Continuous Enrollment” mean? Do I have to take classes in the summer?
Continuous Enrollment means that you take courses each fall and spring semester without a break in attendance. You do not have to take courses in the summer to be considered continuously enrolled, although summer session may help you graduate on time or early.
Are there any exceptions? Could I get a waiver?
Students who have interrupted continuous enrollment may petition for a waiver to retain initial fixed tuition under the following conditions:
- Military service obligation
- Serious medical debilitation
- Short- or long-term disability
If I am a transfer student, do I still get eight semesters of fixed tuition?
Transfer students will receive fixed tuition for a prorated time period, based on credits accumulated at the transferring institution(s). Students transferring between UNC institutions but maintaining continuous enrollment will be subject to the transfer student policy.
Please talk with your adviser to determine what that time period will be for you.
What happens if I do have a break in my enrollment?
When you return after a break in enrollment, you will be required to pay whatever the current tuition is for that academic year. For example, if tuition has increased by 5% since you began your time at WSSU, you will no longer be locked in at the lower rate but instead will pay 5% more for your classes.
What resources are available to me to help plan out my semesters so I can graduate on time?
The Academic Success Counselors in University College and Lifelong Learning (UCaLL) and the Faculty Advisors and Chairpersons in your major departments are available to provide effective academic advising, and the institutional support and resources to facilitate your success.
Remember: 15 in 8 and You Graduate (15 hours in 8 semesters).
UNC Board of Governors Statement about Tuition and Fees
The UNC Board of Governors is authorized to set tuition and fee rates not inconsistent with actions of the NC General Assembly, and presently, the NC General Assembly is still in session. In the event that the NC General Assembly approves rates for tuition that are different from those approved by the Board, students will receive a revised statement of charges due.
Winston-Salem State University is a publicly supported institution. Tuition payments and other required student fees meet only a part of the total cost of the education of students enrolled. On the average, for each full-time student enrolled in an institution of the University of North Carolina, the State of North Carolina appropriated $12,868 per year in public funds to support the educational programs offered. Late Registration
Enrolled students who do not register during the designated registration periods for Fall and Spring will be charged a $100 non-refundable Late Registration Fee.
- The $100 fee will be charged to students who register during the Change of Registration period.
- Students who register and have classes purged due to non-payment will also be charged a non-refundable late fee of $100.

Refund Schedule for Spring 24
Spring 2024 Refunds will be issued weekly beginning January 30, 2024.
The last refunds for the Spring 2024 term will be May 7, 2024.
