Dive into the rich tapestry of Black/African American history from both local and national perspectives. Through this fellowship, you'll shine a spotlight on the Happy Hill neighborhood's role within broader historical contexts. Explore eras like Jim Crow, the Civil Rights Movement, and other landmark events that have shaped African American experiences.
You'll compare social factors, economic influences, and lived experiences of the Happy Hill neighborhood with national trends. This fellowship aligns your academic interests with the research needs of Triad Cultural Arts, INC.
Learning Opportunities:
- Hands-On Museum Creation: Use your research skills to help create a historical museum showcasing African American history in Winston-Salem from the 19th and 20th centuries.
- Oral Histories & Archival Work: Learn to organize and implement oral histories, preserve historical contexts, and manage archival data.
- Content Development: Research and develop engaging written and visual content for museum exhibits.
- Community Engagement: Engage with non-traditional audiences and collaborate on creative visual displays.
Expectations for Student Research Fellows:
- Duration: 1 semester, with potential for a second semester.
- Commitment: 10 hours per week (3 hours of course time and 7 hours of unsupervised research work).
- Weekly Meetings: Meet with the program coordinator weekly.
- Reports & Assessments: Submit weekly reports and complete a mid-point assessment by March.
- Final Project: Complete a research project or creative work by May 1st, 2024 (possible extension through summer). Mentors are encouraged to publish findings with fellows.
- Workshops & Conferences: Attend at least 3 Office of Undergraduate Research workshops and 1 professional conference. Present your work at WSSU Scholarship Week events.
