The Department of History, Politics and Social Justice offers specialized instruction to majors and minors in the social sciences to prepare them for successful employment and for entry into reputable graduate and professional schools. Programs of Study
Military Science Minor
The department houses the minor in Military Science, which is administered by Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (AROTC) on a cross-enrolled basis with the host program at Wake Forest University. The minor prepares qualified students for service to the nation as Army officers. Army ROTC three-year and two-year scholarships are available to qualified applicants (both those already enrolled in the AROTC Program and those not yet enrolled) through annual competition. Students interested in the Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (AFROTC) may enroll in the home program based at North Carolina A&T State University subject to the program policies and procedures.

National Criminal Justice Honor Society
Alpha Phi Sigma is the only nationally recognized honor society for criminal justice. Founded in 1942, it has grown to over 550 chapters at colleges and universities in 50 states, Canada, and Guam. The goal of Alpha Phi Sigma is to promote “Academic Excellence, Leadership, Service and Unity.” Its mission is to promote analytical thinking, rigorous scholarships, and lifelong learning; to keep abreast of the advances in scientific research; to elevate the ethical standard of criminal justice professions and sustain the benefits and necessity of education in the public mind professional training.
Baccalaureate students shall be enrolled at the time of application in the institution represented by the chapter, have declared a major, minor, or equivalent in the criminal justice or related field, have completed 45 semester hours, have a minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, with a minimum GPA of 3.2 in courses in criminal justice-related fields and rank in the top 35% of their class. A minimum of four courses of the above course work shall be in the criminal justice field. Students who completed an Associate degree in Criminal Justice and are currently enrolled in a bachelor’s program with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale are eligible for membership. You may apply by submitting an application with the institution's chapter advisor.
National Honor Society in History
The Phi Alpha Theta National Honor Society is comprised of chapters from properly accredited colleges and universities. All students in these institutions who have completed the required number of history courses and are maintaining high standards in all their college or university studies are eligible for membership. Phi Alpha Theta is oriented to history but membership is not limited to history majors or minors. Only four history courses are required for membership, with a grade point average in all history courses of 3.10. Two-thirds of all other courses must be at least 3.00.
Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. The society seeks to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways.
