Money Magazine: WSSU no. 1 HBCU in North Carolina
For the second consecutive year, Money Magazine has ranked Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) one of the best universities in North Carolina for value.
WSSU ranks as the no. 1 historically Black college and university (HBCU) in North Carolina, and the no. 3 HBCU overall, according to the magazine’s "Best Colleges for Your Money” 2018 rankings, which were released on Tuesday, Aug. 14.
According to Money, WSSU also ranks as the top public university in the Piedmont Triad.
The rankings identify colleges that have a strong record of helping students graduate and preparing them for jobs at which they’ll earn enough to pay off their debt.
“I’m thrilled to see schools being recognized for the value they provide students," said WSSU Chancellor Elwood L. Robinson. "At WSSU, we work every day to create a nurturing environment where students can thrive and succeed. We provide an education that transforms not only our students and their families, but also the future for our city, our state, and beyond. What’s most important to me is that WSSU students depart prepared to be the next generation of scholars, entrepreneurs and leaders."
Robinson points to a recent study that found that each WSSU graduate working full time can expect to earn $1.1 million in additional income due to a college credential.
For the rankings, Money Magazine examine 26 measures of affordability, educational quality and alumni’s financial success. Data was compiled for the ranking from the U.S. Department of Education, Peterson's, PayScale.com and Money/College Measures calculations.
This is one of several recent rankings that recognize WSSU’s success elevating the social and economic well-being of its graduates. WSSU ranks no. 9 on CollegeNET’s 2017 Social Mobility Index (SMI), and is the only East Coast college and university to rank in the top 20 each year of the rankings.
