Frequently Asked Questions
- The time was right to evolve the Ram head logo. Our athletics teams have been requesting a visual symbol that reflects that they are fierce competitors. The new logo provides an opportunity to give the Ram an expression and positions the Ram as ready to go head-to-head with a competitor.
- The previous Ram head logo dates back to the mid-1990s and was designed primarily for use in print. The new logo has been designed to work well for both print and digital applications.
- The new mark draws on previous iterations of the Ram to create a more modern take that conveys courage, spirit, tenacity, and pride.
- The previous Ram was to be used exclusively by athletics. The new logo, however, is more of a “spirit mark” that can be used by departments across the campus to reflect Ram Pride. Guidelines for usage of the Ram are forthcoming.
- The new Ram head logo project was led by the Office of Integrated Marketing Communication, which worked closely with the Department of Athletics.
- A branding committee comprised of students, staff, alumni, student-athletes, coaches, and administrators was formed last fall.
- A survey was distributed to all students and to more than 20,000 alumni. We received more than 1,600 responses to the surveys with more than 75% of respondents saying the change was important to them.
- Additionally, several focus groups were held to solicit feedback throughout the process.
The development of the new logo cost about $20,000. By engaging a small local firm, we were able to work with a team that was intimately familiar with the university and with Winston-Salem. We were able to avoid costly travel and courier fees and managed much of the data gathering in house to bring the overall expenditures down.
- Many of the items that use the Ram head logo were due for replacement, which were costs the university would incur regardless which logo we used.
- Athletics uniforms that were replaced last year were done so without using any logo. As uniforms continue to be replaced, we will incorporate the new logo.
- Other big-ticket items will be replaced as funds permit or on their normal replacement cycle.
- Beginning Aug. 19, people will begin seeing the logo on merchandise, signage, and advertising.
- The University Bookstore will have Ram head logo gear available for sale immediately after the logo rollout event.
- Vendors that sell Ram gear at football games were given early access to the new logo and should be able to start selling updated gear as soon as the first home game in September.
Winston-Salem State University is registering the logo with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
