You should wear comfortable clothing, though appropriate for the classroom. There will be a brief Tai chi class in the morning, so you may want to wear comfortable (not dress) shoes. Please also do not wear tight or revealing clothing such as tights. You may, however, choose to change quickly after the morning exercise routine, if you wish.
1. The opening ceremony has been changed to Monday, July 8 (rather than Sunday, July 7).
2. A site visit from the STARTALK headquarters on Wednesday, July 10 may impact the regular schedule slightly.
3. A field trip to a local Asian market and kitchen is planned for Friday, July 12.
4. Our field trip the Chapel Hill/Raleigh area is planned for Thursday. July 18. That day may require a slightly earlier (8 am) start time, and slightly later stop time (4 pm).
5. Our graduation ceremony is the afternoon of Friday, July 26, and parents are invited.
High school students: Incoming sophomores through seniors. Rising high school freshmen are not eligible.
Colleges students: Incoming freshmen (recent high school graduates) through incoming seniors are eligible to apply.
We will segment students into a beginner group and an intermediate group. If you have some Chinese language experience, we will work with you to determine the best placement in the program for you.
The classroom instruction itself will be hands-on and interactive, but in addition, field trips to local markets and restaurants are being planned.
Even from a beginner level, students with a high aptitude in language should expect to be able to speak basic conversational Chinese at the completion of the course. Intermediate students will be able to use broader vocabulary and have greater command of the language by the end of the program.
Of course! That way, you can apply your learning as you go along, be better prepared, and get more out of the program.
Of course! We will incorporate several meals to help you expand your knowledge of the Chinese culture through its food. You'll also get to be engaged in Chinese exercise (Tai Chi), and may even get to experience traditional Chinese music.
Please see the Home page for information such as dates and hours.
Please 1) submit your online application by May 31, 2019, 2) have a teacher submit the recommendation form online, and then 3) mail your official transcript (either high school or college), consent form, and check. That's it. Then the waiting. You will be notified by June 7, 2019 of your acceptance into the program, possibly earlier.
Because emergencies can arise, etc., we will construct a waiting list and notify those students so that they can be admitted into the program if another student cancels.
University students will get three credit hours. High school students will unfortunately not receive credit, but this will be a great experience and will look great on future applications!
Yes, college credit can be offered to rising high school seniors and college freshmen; however, the tuition will need to be paid by the student. See Admissions.
The two levels are the beginner level and post-beginner. The beginner level is suited for students with no or little experience with Chinese. The post-beginner level is suited for students who have some experience with Chinese (a pre-screening will be conducted).
Our program will even incorporate Tai Chi! Engaging classroom experiences will be achieved through ZOOM, using breakout rooms, where appropriate, multimedia and other technology. We will also include virtual field trip experiences.
Students who successfully complete the program will be awarded an achievement certificate, and the program can be included on college (and other) applications.
Upon completion of the program, students will reach the ACTFL novice mid, high or intermediate low level.
Students will upload 4 learning pieces of evidence to demonstrate that they have achieved the CAN-Do outcomes.
Students must use their own mobile device (preferably a laptop or Chromebook) and have their own wi-fi connection in order to take part in the program.
Some supplies will be provided and sent to students for some of the classroom activities, such as craft and non-perishable food items.
