WSSU Homecoming 2019 is under way: Here’s what you need to know
The weeklong celebration includes concerts, reunions, a step show, coronations, parades, the big game, and new Halloween-themed community event, the Ram-o-Lantern. More than 500 pounds of candy has been donated for the event, which will be held rain or shine.
Homecoming Safety
The safety of students and visitors is always WSSU’s no. 1 priority. WSSU police are in close contact with area law enforcement and have developed a comprehensive security plan for the event. This year, WSSU Police and Public Safety will also receive assistance from Forsyth County Sheriff Office and Kernersville Police Department through mutual aid agreements. To best ensure the safety of the campus community and the public, and to expedite entry into venues, there is a new clear bag policy in place this year at WSSU for the game and for student events.
This year, WSSU’s Homecoming coincides with Wake Forest University’s Family Weekend. With the additional vehicles and the closure of Business 40, visitors are urged to give themselves plenty of time and to become familiar with the alternate routes to and from campus.
Painting the Town Red
This year, WSSU is partnering with Visit Winston-Salem and businesses in the city to make sure alumni and visitors feel extra special as they arrive here in town.
There are more than a dozen welcome banners up around Benton Convention Center and also window clings in stores and restaurants downtown. The U.S. 52 arches also will be lit in Ram Red for the week (Oct. 27-Nov. 2), and the Kimpton Cardinal will be in red on Nov. 2.
WSSU also is encouraging local businesses to make alumni feel welcome by decorating their storefronts and restaurants in red and by using the official hashtag, #WSSUHomecoming.
