Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation supports WSSU students
For nearly 40 years, the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation has supported Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) students through its scholarship program.
Representatives from foundation saw first-hand the impact their support has on WSSU students during a visit to campus on March 13.
“We’re pleased with the generous ongoing support that Winston-Salem State students receive from the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation,” said Dr. LaTanya Afolayan, vice chancellor of advancement.
For the 2018-19 academic, the foundation has provided $150,000 in support to 150 WSSU full-time female students at WSSU. The need-based scholarships provide $1,500 for in-state students and $2,000 for out-of-state students.
Carrie Conway, senior program officer for the foundation, and Lyons Gray, the North Carolina trustee, visited WSSU.
The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation has awarded funding for scholarships to WSSU students since 1981. The scholarships are administered through WSSU’s University Advancement and the Office of Financial Aid.
The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation assists more than 200 institutions in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia annually through its charitable work. The Foundation devotes most of its resources to the Lettie Pate Whitehead scholarship program, which provides scholarship grants to schools and colleges for deserving female students. While most of the scholarships go toward undergraduate higher education, the Foundation maintains a special interest in health education.
For 2017-18, WSSU awarded $1.5 million in foundation and trust scholarships to students. Students who are interested in learning more about scholarships should visit WSSU’s scholarship database.
