WSSU closely monitoring Hurricane Florence
Winston-Salem State University’s Emergency Management is closely monitoring Hurricane Florence. According to the latest forecasts, Florence is gaining strength and may impact the Piedmont Triad as early as Wednesday evening. While the exact track of the storm remains uncertain, there is a possibility of heavy rains, flooding and tropical storm force winds.
At this time, WSSU is open for regular hours and operations.
Athletics Events
- The volleyball game at Fayetteville State, originally scheduled for Sept. 13, has been rescheduled to Oct. 11.
- WSSU will not attend this weekend’s cross country meet at Lenoir-Rhyne University.
- All events for the 21st Down East Football Viking Classic, scheduled for Sept. 12-15, have been canceled. The game may be rescheduled at a later time in Elizabeth City. Tickets purchased for the game can be returned where purchased for a refund.

What you can do to prepare:
- Make sure you are signed up for RamALERT, WSSU’s Emergency Notification System, to receive text messages.
- Pay close attention to email communications. Residential students also will may receive additional communications from Housing and Residential Life.
- Monitor the forecast from the National Weather Service in Raleigh and the National Hurricane Center.
- Talk with your supervisor about emergency plans and become familiar with WSSU’s adverse weather/emergency closing plans.
