WSSU Scholarship Day set for Thursday
What started 10 years ago as a small departmental gathering has grown into one of Winston-Salem State University’s largest academic events, with hundreds of students participating in symposiums, contests and poster presentations, all on one day.
Scholarship Day, set for Thursday, April 12, aims to highlight the advanced level of graduate and undergraduate research at WSSU and recognize the scholars who do the work.
A highlight of Scholarship Day is the annual Scholarship Day Poster Session, from 1:30-3 p.m. in the Donald J. Reaves Student Activities Center gymnasium.
“This event affords alumni, the WSSU community, employers and the Winston-Salem community the opportunity to interact with our current students, and see the level of work they are producing,” said Michael McKenzie, interim associate provost. “It is truly an outstanding academic event.”
Last year, over 150 poster exhibits highlighting research were presented by student scholarship. This year’s event is expected to be even bigger, McKenzie said.
In addition to the poster presentations, Scholarship Day includes:
- Departmental guest speakers and student and faculty presentations.
- The annual scholarship luncheon, an invitation-only event for alumni and donors with guest speaker Aaron Brown, a senior biology major who was recently accepted into Emory University to pursue a master’s in public health. The winners of the undergraduate writing competition also will be announced during the luncheon.

The event is part of Paint the Town Red, an initiative to engage alumni, the community and prospective students throughout the month of April.
