WSNC radio is back at full power
Louis, Duke and Ella are back stronger than ever for Triad listeners.
For the first time since the summer, Genuine Jazz WSNC 90.5 FM is airing at full power.
WSNC, the Triad’s only jazz station, signed on with a new $40,000 transmitter on Nov. 22. The transmitter improves the strength, quality, consistency and clarify of its signal, said Ben Donnelly, interim general manager for the Winston-Salem State University-based radio station.
“Our new transmitter runs on the solid-state technology and should last for decades,” Donnelly said.
The old transmitter, which was purchased in the early 1990s, ran on outdated vacuum tube technology and finally died last summer when multiple systems failed, he said. Since the summer, the station had been using rented equipment and running on about 10 percent of its power.
The listen-supported station is now looking for help to pay for the transmitter. Listeners can make a donation or become a sustaining member online, Donnelly said.
WSNC, with studios and tower at WSSU, provides programming to listeners interested in jazz, blues, gospel, news from National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Radio International (PRI), and public affairs programming. The station first broadcast in 1983.
