WSSU nursing expands partnership with Chinese university
Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) and Hubei University of Chinese Medicine have signed a five-year collaborative agreement that will expand opportunities for WSSU nursing students and faculty to study in China.
“We are excited about taking our memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hubei University of Chinese Medicine to the next level,” said Dr. Peggy Valentine, dean of the School of Health Sciences. “This agreement will provide an opportunity for our faculty and students to embrace the whole concept of global learning and a global perspective.”
As part of the MOU, signed on Oct. 26 by WSSU Chancellor Elwood L. Robinson and Hubei University President Lyu Wenliang, Hubei University will develop a free one or two-week training program in Chinese acupuncture or traditional Chinese medicine for WSSU undergraduates and graduate students.
Valentine said the expanded program will begin with five faculty members and two WSSU students traveling to Wuhan City over Spring Break.
WSSU first began a partnership with Hubei University, located in the central area of China, in 2010. In 2014, nursing students from Hubei began studying at WSSU as part of a dual degree program, which will continue under the MOU. This fall, 11 Chinese students are studying at WSSU through the program.
The Hubei University of Chinese Medicine is located in Wuhan City, Hubei Province in the central area of the People’s Republic of China. Established in 1931, the university has more than 18,000 students and offers more than 18 specialties in medicine.
The visiting delegation from Hubei included: President Wenliang; Duan Wei, director of the international exchange; Yang Ling, section chief of the Office of Foreign Affairs; and Wu Wenjing, program coordinator.
