Video: Students create 'Singing Rams Hype Jam'

A new hype song, co-written by five Winston-Salem State University music students, is letting people know the Singing Rams are on the map.

For their first assignment, students enrolled this fall in The Singing Rams were asked to create and learn a new song to show what they are all about.

The song, “Singing Rams Hype Jam,” was co-written by five students: Jessica Johnson, Nia Lewis, Rashad Woodard, Lauryn Rainey and Christian Stewart.

Stewart explains how the song came about: “I started out with the melody, and they came up with the words. We were kind of like all working together.”

Johnson said: “We just want people to know the Singing Rams are on the map.”

Woodard added: “What we’re singing about is what we’re about … inspiring others."

WSSU's Integrated Marketing and Communications produced the music video of the new song in the foyer of the Donald J. Reaves Student Activities Center on campus.

About 50 students are enrolled this semester in the course, taught by Maestra D’Walla Simmons-Burke, director of choral and vocal studies at WSSU. The students are a combination of all singing ensembles at WSSU, Schola Cantorum, the Burke Singers, Singing Divas and the University Choir.
