WSSU’s historic bell looking brighter after restoration

The historic bell dates back to around 1900. 

Winston-Salem State University’s historic bell has been restored just in time for the university’s 125th anniversary.

The bell, which dates back to around 1900, was returned to its pedestal on the historic lawn between Blair and Carolina halls on June 26 after a three-week restoration. 

WSSU's Facilities Design and Construction contracted Duncan Lewis, a sculptor and metal worker from Rural Hall, to restored the bell and add a weather-resistant coating.

The bell is one of the most historically significant monuments on campus. In the early days of the university, it was used to signal when it was time to attend classes or events on campus. 

WSSU recently received a $30,000 Home Depot Retool Your School grant for improvements to fund a gazebo that will help protect the bell and provide covered seating area. The grant also will be used to restore wood benches around the campus and to repair and upgrade landscaping and plant beds.

WSSU will celebrate its 125th birthday with a ceremony and celebration on Sept. 28.
