Appointments to the WSSU Board of Trustees announced
The University of North Carolina Board of Governors has made three appointments and reappointed one member to the Winston-Salem State University Board of Trustees.
New appointments are: Kathleen Kelly, of Greensboro, Drewry Hanes Nostitz, of Winston-Salem, and David Jerod Smith, of Campbell, California. Dr. William Harris ’58, of Charlotte, has been reappointed.
Kelly is a founding and managing partner of Compass Financial Partners, LLC, in Greensboro. She was a member of Leadership Greensboro’s Class of 2002 and was awarded the Triad Business Journal’s “Women in Business” award. Originally from Saratoga, New York, she received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Wake Forest University.
Nostitz and her family are longtime supporters of the Winston-Salem community. She has served on the boards for many area schools, as well as arts and service organizations. Nostitz also is a trustee for the John Wesley and Anna Hodgin Hanes Foundation and the James G. Hanes Foundation, and a member of the WSSU Foundation Board of Directors. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Mills College in Oakland, California, and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from State University New York at New Paltz.
Smith was recently named senior director of mergers and acquisitions at eBay. Previously, he worked as a managing director at BNY Mellon. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Harris, the current chair of WSSU’s Board of Trustees, retired in 2001 from the College Board Middle States Regional Office in Philadelphia as regional executive director. Previously, he served as a teacher and principal in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from WSSU, a Master of Science in Elementary Education from Indiana University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from The Union Institute & University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Previously, Harris was chair of the WSSU Board of Visitors.
Each will serve four-year terms beginning July 1. The appointments were approved during the Board of Governors meeting on Friday, May 19.

The WSSU Board of Trustees serves as advisor to the Board of Governors on matters pertaining to WSSU and also serves as advisor to the chancellor concerning the management and development of the institution. It is comprised of 13 members with eight members elected by the UNC Board of Governors and four appointed by the governor. The Student Government Association president serves an ex officio member.
