Biography

Jeanine Luciana Lino Silva Couto, Ph.D. (she/her/hers) is a scholar and educator with over thirty years of experience, specializing in Luso-Brazilian, Latin American, and Afro-Diasporic literatures and cultures. She is currently the Interim Chair of the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Winston-Salem State University, a position to which she was elected by her colleagues.

Dr. Couto's academic journey began in Brazil, where she earned her Master's degree in Literatures of English Expression from the Federal University of Minas Gerais. She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research employs a comparative, feminist framework to analyze the works of women writers across the Americas, with a specific focus on twentieth-century Brazil, Spanish-speaking Latin America, and the Caribbean.

A qualified instructor in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, Dr. Couto's teaching portfolio includes language courses as well as specialized classes in Afro-Lusophone Culture and Literature and World Language Film. 

Her current research projects include the study of Quilombola literature from her native state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, as well as the innovative integration of artificial intelligence into pedagogy for language acquisition and film studies.
