MSRC graduates are eligible to sit for the national Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) examination and North Carolina Board of Licensure Clinical Mental Health Counselors. Candidates may also pursue the state Professional Clinical Mental Health Counselor licensure (LMHC). 

Please see the Course Catalog for official listing of admission requirements for this program. Requirements include such qualifications as:

• an acceptable Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score within the last five years,
• a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.7,
• an acceptable interview with faculty from the Rehabilitation Counseling program,
• application and non-refundable application processing fee, resume,
• three professional references,
• two sets of official transcripts from each college and university previously mentioned.

The Rehabilitation Counseling Program will only review applicants with a minimum cumulative GPA of a 2.7. If the applicant has a master’s degree or above, the GPA from the advanced degree (master’s degree or above) will be reviewed along with of the undergraduate GPA.

The program admits students during the fall, spring and summer semester of each academic year. The deadline for applications is April 1 (summer), April 15 (fall) and November 15 (spring). Please note that applications must be reviewed and verified by WSSU enrollment management before they can be processed by the Department’s Admissions Committee, therefore, we recommend that completed applications be submitted 4 weeks prior to the deadline.

All applicants must take the GRE and submit their scores. There is no minimum score, however, the program will assign a certain number of points based on the analytic and verbal scores. Students scoring low will receive fewer points while students scoring high would receive a greater number of points. Therefore, there is no elimination based solely on the GRE. In order for the GRE to be considered, it must have been taken within 5 years of applying to the program.

MSRC program admits every semester. The number of students admitted to the program varies based on the number of available spaces.

The admissions committee meets on a regular schedule and as decisions are made, recommendations are sent to the WSSU Admissions office. They will send out admissions letters within two weeks of receiving the department’s decisions. The program has had 50 - 100 applicants per year.

The Department of RC has online and in person informational sessions where information will be covered related to the program and admissions. Applicants are encouraged to attend these open houses. Dates for the open houses are available by emailing rehabcounseling@wssu.edu.
