WSSU to wrap up Veterans Affairs Month with a community panel Nov. 25

Winston-Salem State University will wrap up its Veterans Affairs Month programming with a Veteran and Military Community Panel on Nov. 25 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Thompson Center, Room 207B.

The event will feature faculty veterans, military-connected students, and veteran alumni who will share their experiences in military service and higher education. Panelists will discuss the challenges they have faced and the successes they have achieved throughout their service and academic journeys.

The discussion is designed to promote understanding and celebrate the strength and resilience of WSSU’s military-affiliated community.

Organizers hope the event will inspire continued support for veterans, active-duty service members and their families. Students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to attend.

The panel concludes a monthlong series honoring veterans and military-connected Rams. Earlier activities included an online town hall for military-affiliated students, faculty and staff; a meet-and-greet for students who are military dependents using educational benefits; and a Veterans Day social that provided refreshments and an opportunity for fellowship among veterans and service members.

November is recognized nationally as Veterans and Military Families Month, a month dedicated to honoring the sacrifices and contributions of U.S. service members, veterans and their families. Established in 2016, the observance expands upon Veterans Day by dedicating the entire month to celebrating the military community and acknowledging the crucial support military families provide.

In 2023, the Department of Veterans Affairs adopted a new motto inspired by President Abraham Lincoln’s second inaugural address: “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his families, caregivers, and survivors.” This guiding statement underscores the nation’s continued commitment to supporting veterans and those who stand beside them.
