Staff Senate Chair Shagail Reed elected as at-large delegate to the UNC System Staff Assembly

Shagail Reed, office manager in the Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Winston-Salem State University, has been elected to serve as an at-large delegate to the University of North Carolina System Staff Assembly.

The UNC System Staff Assembly is an advisory body of SHRA and EHRA Non Faculty Employees who represent the staff of the 17 schools that make up the University of North Carolina. It was established in 2006 under then system president Erskine Bowles.

Reed currently serves as chair of the WSSU Staff Senate, following a two-year term as vice chair. She has been an active member since becoming a permanent university employee in 2015. Her Staff Senate journey began as chair of the Employee Recognition Committee, a role that first sparked her passion for celebrating staff achievements and boosting morale across campus.

In her new position, Reed will attend all executive committee and Staff Assembly meetings, serve on standing and ad hoc committees, and help shape initiatives that support and uplift staff across the UNC System.

“I am honored to serve as one of the at-large delegates for the UNC System Staff Assembly,” Reed said. “As someone deeply committed to advocacy and service, I believe strongly in the power of shared governance and collaboration across all 17 institutions.”

Before joining WSSU, Reed dedicated 29 years of service to the Housing Authority of the City of Winston-Salem, where she led the Hospitality and Employee Appreciation Committees. These experiences strengthened her lifelong dedication to creating environments where employees feel valued, supported and inspired.

“Ms. Reed’s dedication to collaboration and staff excellence has made her an invaluable part of the WSSU community,” said Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Stevie Lawrence. “Her election to the UNC System Staff Assembly is a testament to her leadership and the respect she has earned among her peers.”

Reed, who earned her Bachelor of Science in business administration from High Point University, said her commitment to service and advocacy is guided by her personal motto, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi: The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
