WSSU hosts inaugural Summer Research Institute on Interprofessional Collaboration

Winston-Salem State University, in partnership with InterprofessionalResearch.Global, the Northwest Area Health Education Center, and with support from the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions, successfully hosted the inaugural Summer Research Institute.

This groundbreaking virtual institute, held Sept. 19-21, brought together 11 fellows and 19 expert mentors and presenters from across the U.S., Canada and the U.K., all committed to advancing research in Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice. The SRI provides immersive training in IPECP research methods, project development and scholarly dissemination, followed by a three-week mentorship period that led to Fellows’ Project Presentations on October 17.

The SRI Leadership Team, which included leadership by WSSU’s Dr. Hossein Khalili, senior associate dean of the School of Health Sciences and president of IPR.Global, were honored during the institute with two distinguished awards: the Joint SOHS & IPR Global Excellence in Teaching Award and the Office of Research and Innovation Distinguished Leadership in Interprofessional Research Award.

Other team members were Dr. Maria Brucato of Thomas Jefferson University; Dr. Craig Slater of Boston University; Dr. Kelly Lackie (Leadership Award) of Dalhousie University, Canada; and Dr. Melissa Owens (Joint Teaching Award) of the University of York, UK.

Khalili gave special thanks go to the SRI Planning and Research Team, the WSSU School of Health Sciences (Dean Leslee Battle), the WSSU Office of Research and Innovation (Dr. Shawn Holt), Northwest AHEC, and Project Coordinator AEli Dell for their vital support and coordination behind the scenes.

He also recognized those attending the welcome diner on Sept. 19: Dr. Judy Foxworth, professor and chair of the WSSU Department of Physical Therapy, who served as host; Montrale Boykin, dean of the WSSU Graduate College, who offered a welcome; and Dr. Fenghai Guo, a WSSU chemistry professor, who presented the awards on behalf of Holt.

The success of this first-ever SRI reflects WSSU’s leadership in building research capacity and promoting interprofessional collaboration on a global scale, Khalili said.
