Rams take charge at NBA HBCU All-Star Weekend
Winston-Salem State University painted Indianapolis red last weekend when it dominated the 2024 NBA HBCU All-Star Weekend.
Not only did the WSSU Rams men’s basketball team win 64-47 over the Virginia Union Panthers in a game simulcast on three major networks – TNT, ESPN2 and NBA TV – but the once-in-a-lifetime experience spilled off the courts as well.
For the team, there were film sessions, scouting reports, walkthroughs, and meeting NBA players, WSSU head basketball coach Cleo Hill told HBCU Gameday.
For the Red Sea of Sound, there were performances with national recording artists Jennifer Hudson and Coco Jones as well as the pep rally, which featured the WSSU Powerhouse of Red and White cheerleaders.
There was just as much going on off camera than on that put WSSU in the national spotlight.
“The visibility was awesome and to be able to share with people who we are as Winston-Salem State University – Rams take charge – and what our legacy is all about. You can’t ask for a bigger stage. Athletics is really a gateway to telling everyone about who we are as an institution,” said Etienne Thomas, WSSU athletics director.
“The student-athletes had a great experience,” said WSSU interim Chancellor Dr. Anthony Graham. “Thanks to the CIAA and the NBA. This is what we’re supposed to do for our students: create a memorable experience that helps them grow.”
Alumnus and host of ESPN’s “First Take,” Stephen A. Smith, announced that WSSU and VUU would be participating in the NBA HBCU All Star game on Nov. 7 when he hosted his show live from the campus of his alma mater.
