Safety Tips for Homecoming 2023

WSSU’s Forever Red Homecoming is the time to celebrate Winston-Salem State University’s spirit and respect some of our most beloved traditions. By celebrating all the wonderful things about being a Ram, it is advised to be cautious while enjoying the festivities of WSSU Homecoming.

This year there are a few changes to note for Homecoming. Many events will be held in the Benton Convention Center in downtown Winston-Salem. Wake Forest University will also be celebrating their homecoming so plan for traffic and crowded streets. WSSU is offering free shuttle services from campus to downtown Monday through Friday. We highly recommend that you use the shuttles rather than trying to find parking downtown.

SAFETY TIPS FOR HOMECOMING 2023

• Be mindful.  Refrain from letting the festive atmosphere catch you off guard.

• Pay attention to your surroundings. Knowing where you are and who is around you may help you find a way out in the event of an emergency.  If any person or situation looks suspicious or dangerous report it to campus police.
• Always stay with your drink at social gatherings.  If you leave your drink and come back to it, throw it away and get a new one.
• Beware of ticket scalpers. Event tickets are encouraged to be purchased from an approved ticket vendor or the WSSU Ticket Office. 
• Avoid displaying large sums of money.  
• Protect and secure your valuables.
• Keep your room and vehicle doors locked.
• Do not lend your RAM card to others to access buildings.
• Have a plan. You can view the entire Homecoming schedule here.
• Go with a group of friends to social gatherings. Before the event, discuss meeting locations, and arrival and departure times. Remember to check in with each other throughout the event.
• Don’t allow yourself to be isolated with someone you don’t trust or someone you don’t know.
• Make sure your cell phone is charged.
• Do not take rides from strangers.  Please make sure you have access to ride share programs in this area.
• N.C. State law prohibits the operation of a motor vehicle while drinking alcoholic beverages. We encourage you not to drink and drive. Call a friend.
• Call WSSU Campus Police if you notice any suspicious activity at 336-750-2900.   Don’t forget to save the University Police number in your phone before your festivities begin. Remember, safety and security are everyone’s business.
• Work with those who have your safety in interest to prevent crimes.
• Be responsible: Fun is a priority during Homecoming, but safety should be first.

Chancellor Anthony Graham and WSSU Police and Public Safety want to ensure that Homecoming is a fun, welcoming, and safe experience for everyone. WSSU Police and Public Safety are collaborating with many outside agencies, including the Winston-Salem Police, Fire Departments, Forsyth County EMS along with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, to ensure the safest possible experience while on campus.

While you are on WSSU’s campus, you will see an increase in law enforcement and security presence. We aim for all Homecoming attendees to experience a safe and enjoyable weekend. We encourage event attendees to stay alert and aware during this time.
