WSSU nursing renews major accreditation
Winston-Salem State University’s nursing program’s accreditation from the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education has been renewed for an additional 10 years.
The following programs were included in the renewal:
- Baccalaureate degree program in nursing
- Master’s degree program in nursing
- Doctor of nursing practice program (DNP)
- Post-graduate APRN certificate program
“We knew we did well in the last accreditation visit, said Dr. Cecil Holland, associate dean and COO of Nursing, “Our faculty is constantly working to ensure our program is among the most prestigious in the nation.”
The process of completing accreditation is arduous. Four standards have to be met in order to receive this distinction. The basis of program standards is centered around the quality of faculty, institutional commitment and resources, curriculum, and program effectiveness. WSSU’s program far exceeded the standards allowing for the maximum renewal period of 10 years.
Accreditation is particularly important because, as noted earlier, it speaks directly to the quality of the academic program. This renewal is an additional accolade to the host of national rankings and honors that WSSU’s nursing program has received.
Dr. Holland also stated that accreditation helps with recruitment. Perspective students are often looking for these types of programs because they know it elevates them on their job hunt. Recruiters often approach schools with accreditation because of the potential to get a higher quality applicant.
