August Kudos: Faculty, staff and student awards, appointments and achievements
Torin Alexander, assistant professor of liberal studies, has an article in the August issue of Africology: The Journal of Pan African Studies. The article is titled: “Africana Religion, 'Black Panther' and the Marvel Cinematic University (MCU).”
Manju Bhat, associate professor of physiology and co-chair of the Department of Biological Sciences; Christina Placilla, associate professor of music and director of the WSSU Chamber Orchestra; and Bart Ganzert, faculty development specialist, presented at the Southern Learning and Technology Expo SLATE 2018 in Winston-Salem. The title of their presentation was "Gamification for your class: Improving Student Engagement through gamifying the classroom."
Christina Criminger, assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, recently graduated from the six-month Early Career Development Program for Women through the Office of Women and Science at Wake Forest School of Medicine.
Judy Foxworth, Lynn Millar and Chris Wendt, all with the Department of Physical Therapy, presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine on May 31. Their presentation was titled, "Hip joint torques during the golf swing of young and senior healthy females.”
Island Green, a junior sports management major from Charlotte, was recently highlighted by Golf Digest magazine. The article focused on Green’s summer internship with the PGA Tour.
Robert A. Herring III presented a role play at the Management and Organizational Behavior Teaching Society Conference, held in June at Coastal Carolina University. The role play was titled: "The Canadian Money Exchange." The exercise demonstrably and humorously teaches the impact and effects of varying currency exchange rates.
Jaime Hunt, vice chancellor for Strategic Communications, has been invited to record a webinar for the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), an international association of educational institutions. The webinar topic is "Duct Tape and Bubble Gum: Branding on a Shoestring."
Cheryl Jefferies, university program associate in the Center for Innovation and Transformative Instruction (CITI) was recently appointed vice-chair of The Thomasville City Schools School Board.
Joel Lee, assistant vice chancellor for Enrollment Management, was a co-presenter at the 2018 Ruffalo Noel Levitz National Conference, held July 24-26 in Orlando. The topic, “Signal Through the Noise: Reaching Students of Generation Z,” focused on the needs and expectations of Gen Z students and how real-time text-based responsiveness is a necessity in 2018 for meeting students where they are and providing an on-demand, personalized communication platform.
Dr. Michele Lewis, associate professor and chair of the Department of Psychological Sciences, presented at the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi) International Convention on June 28 in Oakland, California. Lewis presented on the topic of “Decision-Making & Motivation Compromised by Poverty? A Cultural Neuroscience Framework for Emancipation and Empowerment.” This was based on preliminary data from her research for WSSU's Center for the Study of Social Mobility (CSEM).
Dr. Georgia A. McCauley, chair, program manager and associate professor for the Clinical Laboratory Science Department, has received the American Medical Technologists (AMT) Cuviello Commitment to Excellence in Education Award. The award was presented at the AMT 80th Educational Program and National Meeting held July 1-5 in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes an AMT member or non-member who has made significant contributions to AMT in continuing education.
Pamela Moses-Snipes and Vincent Snipes, faculty in the Department of Mathematics, received a $5,500 grant from the Winston-Salem Foundation to create the Love Center Math Camp, a K-8 STEM-based camp for children in the East Winston community. The camp, held July 23-27 at the Love Center, was a collaboration between WSSU's Mathematics Department and the Love Center.
Robert Muhammad, director of the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, co-wrote an article about strategic enrollment management (SEM) and financial aid practices that was published in the April issue of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers SEM Quarterly. The article, co-written with Dr. Kristen McManus, is titled, "Charting the Course: Using Data Analytics to Assist with Strategic Enrollment Management." It details how WSSU uses data and social media to accomplish no lines at the start of fall and spring terms.
Patricia Oliver, assistant registrar and veterans certifying official, has been invited to serve on the University of North Carolina Board of Governors Special Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs. The first meeting of the committee, chaired by Governor William Webb, was on Aug. 21.
Dr. Nancy Smith, clinical associate professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, has been selected for induction into the Academy of Advanced Item Writers. Smith will be recognized at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) on Oct. 27.
