WSSU hosts minority construction and supplier outreach

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) showed its support for supplier diversity by hosting the Eighth Annual Minority Construction and Supplier Outreach on June 14.

Nearly 100 representatives from certified Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUBs), state agencies and universities attended the event, which aims to provide resources to contractors and suppliers to connect them to the decision makers from the UNC System Universities and corporate firms.   

The Triad Coalition, which sponsored the event, was established at WSSU in partnership with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and North Carolina A&T State University.

Brenda Fulmore, director of supplier diversity for WSSU, said increasing opportunities for HUB Certified firms is one of the university’s operational goals and a State of North Carolina’s G.S. 143-128.2 compliance requirement.

Thanks to events like this, Fulmore said, WSSU boasted 52 percent HUB participation for H. Douglas Covington Hall, the new freshman living/learning community that is set to open in August, 2018.

The luncheon speaker was Andrea Harris, former president and CEO of The Institute, and Dr. Eunice Dudley, CEO of Dudley Cosmetology Schools, was the mistress of ceremonies.

To qualify as a minority-owned firm, 51 percent of the business must be owned by and the day-to-day management and daily operations are controlled by, one of the following:

  • Black, Hispanic, Asian-American or American Indian
  • Female
  • Socially and economically disadvantaged person
  • Disabled
