Single Stop Services offers free tax preparation assistance to students
Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is partnering with Single Stop Services to help students through the process of filing their income taxes.
Through the service, a staff member from WSSU’s Single Stop Services office helps students navigate through the tax site and answers questions about the submission process.
“We are excited that we can offer this to our students,” says Patricia Eaddy, director of Single Stop Services at WSSU. “Free tax preparation assistance is a great way for students to consider financial planning. It provides students with an opportunity to open up a savings account or build their personal finances.”
Tax preparation assistance isn’t the only free service available through the Single Stop Office at WSSU. Single Stop also helps students connect with various county resources, such as food and nutrition services, utility assistance, Medicaid, housing and childcare. Single Stop also has partnerships with community food pantries and the WSSU Rams Helping Hands Food Pantry.
“When students’ basic needs are met, it allows them to focus on being the best student they can be,” Eaddy says. “Programs like Single Stop help students to empower themselves. Grades tend to increase, keeping students motivated to complete their education.”
Single Stop – a national organization that connects low-income families and student to resources, support and services – launched its services in North Carolina in 2015, and partnered with WSSU in July 2016. WSSU is the only public, historically black college in the nation to offer Single Stop Services. Since 2016, over 200 WSSU students have used the services.
Tax preparation assistance is available until April 30. Interested students must first complete a profile in the Single Stop Services office located in the Student Success Center at Hill Hall, room 217. For more information, visit WSSU’s Single Stop website.
