Averill Foundation donation to support WSSU virtual hospital

Larry and Sue Averill present the donation to WSSU.

The School of Health Sciences (SOHS) at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) has received a $15,000 donation from the Averill Foundation to support simulation training.

The grant funded the purchase of an Enovate Smart Cart and technical training for faculty. The equipment will be based in the SOHS Virtual Hospital where students engage in simulated learning prior to their clinical rotations.

Larry and Sue Averill, trustees for the Averill Foundation, presented the donation to WSSU recently.

“We’re grateful to Larry and Sue Averill for their support, as we provide state-of-the-art learning for students.” says Dr. Peggy Valentine, dean of the SOHS. “This will help us better meet the demands of preparing students for clinical practice.”

WSSU’s SOHS enrolls over 1,500 students pursuing careers in nursing and allied health professions; the majority of them are nursing students.

“Most hospitals are equipped with smart medical carts that are used by nurses to enter important patient information in the electronic health record,” says Dr. Cecil Holland, interim associate dean for nursing. “We are dedicated to offering advanced learning for health professions students.”
