Toyota Financial Services donates $10,000 to WSSU

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) has received a $10,000 scholarship donation from Toyota Financial Services (TFS) in honor of the life and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“We are thankful to corporate partners like Toyota Financial Services for their support of Winston-Salem State University students,” said Michelle Cook, vice chancellor of university advancement and executive director of the WSSU Foundation. “Through this support, we are able to help students who need financial assistance continue their education and graduate.”

The donation will provide $2,500 need-based scholarships for four full-time WSSU students. Students will be identified for the scholarships through the Office of Financial Aid.

“Dr. King’s dream included the belief that young people should be given an opportunity to receive the best education possible,” said John Ridgeway, TFS corporate manager of TFS’ Customer Service Center in Maryland. “As a Toyota executive and an HBCU alumnus, I am proud to see Toyota Financial Services supporting these fine institutions and advocating higher education within our communities.”

WSSU is one of five Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to receive support from TFS. The Tom Joyner Foundation received an additional $10,000.

“For the third year, we’re so glad to partner with Toyota Financial Services in supporting the vision of HBCUs,” said Thomas Joyner Jr., president and CEO of the foundation. “These scholarships are an important investment in these schools, and are critical in helping students pursue their dreams.”
